May 1-31st, 2015 is National Military Appreciation Month. Congress designated May as National Military Appreciation Month in 1999 to ensure the nation was given the opportunity to publically demonstrate their appreciation for the sacrifices and successes made by our service members - past and present. Each year the president makes a proclamation, reminding Americans of the important role the U.S. Armed Forces have played in the history and development of our country.  Within May there are several military related national observances.

Military Spouse Appreciation Day
Observed: Friday, May 8th, 2015, traditionally set for the Friday before Mother’s Day.  Many United States citizens take this day to acknowledge the significant contributions, support, and sacrifices of spouses of the Armed Forces.

Armed Forces Day
2015 Theme: “Honor Those Who Answered the Call to Serve”
Observed: Saturday, May 16th, 2015, Celebrated the third Saturday in May every year.
Armed Forces Day is a holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.  This day honors everyone serving in the U.S. Military branches; Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy.

Memorial Day
Observed: Monday, May 25th, 2015, A Federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May.  Memorial Day is a day for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's Armed Forces.

Colonial Williamsburg. The historic attraction will offer FREE ADMISSION to military members and their families during Memorial Day weekend. From Friday, May 22, to Monday May 25, active duty military, reservists, retirees, veterans, and their families will receive free admission to the historic attraction.  On Monday, there will be a Memorial Day Commemorative Program from 10am-12pm.  Gather for a modern service honoring military veterans who died while serving their country. A procession with Fife and Drum support will proceed from the Palace to Bruton Parish Church and the French gravesite. Wreaths will be laid, prayers given, and volleys fired at each stop to honor soldiers of the American Revolution and Civil War interred nearby.

Blue Star Museums program. Participating museums will offer FREE ADMISSION to all active duty military and their families from Memorial Day to Labor Day.  There are many amazing museums a part of this program.  Click the link to learn more.

Blue Star Theatres:  Each participating Blue Star Theatre is offering discounted or complimentary admission to all military personnel and their families, as well as veterans.  Education programs and other theatre opportunities may be discounted as well.  This is a year round program.  There are currently 123 participating theaters with new theaters being added.  

AcaciaTV: AcaciaTV partners with The National Military Family Association to keep military families across the globe healthy & fit.  In honor of National Military Appreciation Month: AcaciaTV will offer a 35% Military Discount for the entire month of May 2015 on all new memberships. National Park Service:  The National Park Service offers a FREE annual pass to military members and their dependents. Local national parks include Jamestown National Historic Site and Colonial National Historical Park in Yorktown.

Waves of Honor:  This program offers any active duty military, reservist or National Guardsman one FREE admission each year to either Busch Gardens or WaterCountry USA The one-time visit pass is valid for the military personnel and up to three direct dependents.  Other parks included in this offer are Seaworld, Sesame Street, Aquatica, and Adventure Island.

California's Great America: Military Appreciation May 23-25, 2015 On Saturday Boomerang Bay opens. Then on Monday we'll salute the military with a color guard presentation and an all-you-can-eat BBQ ($15.99 plus tax). We'll pay tribute to our brave military service men and women by offering FREE park admission to active or retired United States Service men and women, including veterans, with a valid military I.D. All current or past military personnel can bring up to six guests for just $19.99 each.
*Maximum of six (6) discount admission tickets per Military Personnel per day of the promotion. Tickets can be purchased at any open ticket booth. Kings Dominion: Join us May 23-25 and July 4-5 as we pay tribute to our brave military service men and women by offering FREE park admission to any active, inactive or retired United States Service men and women with a valid military I.D. Enjoy activities planned each day along International Street. 

Michigan's Adventure: Michigan's Adventure will be celebrating Tribute to the Armed Forces by offering military personnel of the Armed Forces, National Guard and Reserve a free admission. In addition, military personnel may purchase up to six additional tickets for family members at $24.00 each.

Valleyfair:  Valleyfair is honoring our Hometown Heroes with Military Appreciation Days Memorial Day Weekend- May 22-25.  Any member of the armed service, active or veteran, will receive a free regular admission ticket into Valleyfair. Along with free admission, members of the military will be able to purchase discount admission tickets for members of their immediate family (maximum of six) at a special military discount price of $29.99 plus tax per ticket. A valid military ID must be presented at a Valleyfair ticket window to receive this offer.

Wildwater Kingdom: Saturday, May 23 - Monday, May 25.  Join us as we kick off the season at Wildwater Kingdom! All weekend long, active, inactive or retired United States Service men and women will receive free admission to the park (with a valid military I.D.)  Enjoy special food deals too! Kings Island:  FREE admission for active duty, VETERANS, and ROTC during Memorial Day Weekend, May 22 - 25, plus, they can buy up to 6 additional tickets for family members for the military discount price of $29.99!  Additionally, Kings Island offers a military discount to active duty military and up to 6 family members all season long!  Plus, another Free weekend during the Fourth of July holiday July 3-5

Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo: FREE admission for active duty,VETERANS, retired military and up to 3 direct dependents to the Zoo on Memorial Day, May 25.

LEGOLAND® California:  LEGOLAND California is opening their new Legends of Chima Water Park Memorial Day weekend. All active duty military personnel, National Guard and Reservists can receive military discounts, including a second free day.

Crime Museum:  This Memorial Day, the Crime Museum is creating care packages for our troops. If you’d like to donate the requested items, you’ll receive $10 admission (for military and family members).

Crayola Experience:  Active duty and retired military receive free admission with a valid military ID Memorial Day Weekend (Saturday May 24 - Monday May 26). Additionally, any groups of 15 people or more receive a $5.00 off regular admission price. 

Boston Children's Museum: FREE admission for active duty military OR one military dependent.

Carnegie Hall:  Both active duty personnel and veterans of the US military can save 30% on tickets to Carnegie Hall presentations (except Gala events and Carnegie Hall Family Concerts). These tickets can only be purchased in person at the Carnegie Hall Box Office. You must present a valid military or veteran identification card, or a DD Form 214, and are limited to two tickets per person.

Lowe's Home Improvement: All Veterans receive a 10% discount on Memorial Day. This is not to be confused with the Everyday 10% Military Discount which is available to those who are currently serving, Retired Veterans, or VA Recipients and their immediate family. See link for official rules.

Home Depot: A 10% discount is offered to all military veterans on Memorial Day to all veterans up to a maximum of $500. A year round 10% discount is available at all U.S. locations to active duty personnel, reservists, retired or disabled veterans and their immediate families. Must present a valid military ID. Unfortunately Home Depot does not accept state ID cards with veterans designation (some locations may). Note: Home Depot has unfortunately removed the military discount policy from their website while keeping the discount intact.

National Memorial Day Concert. Washington DC, Sunday, May 24, 2015, 8 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m. PBS sponsors a FREE concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The concert features actors Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise, and other guest artists along with the National Symphony Orchestra.

National Memorial Day Parade: Washington DC, Monday, May 25, 2015, beginning at 2 p.m. The parade of Marching Bands and Veterans units from all 50 states steps off at the corner of Constitution Avenue and 7th Streets, NW and proceeds along Constitution Avenue, past the White House, ending at 17th Street. The National Memorial Day Parade is sponsored by the World War II Veterans Committee and includes patriotic floats and helium-filled balloons.

Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Rally: Sunday, May 24, 2015. Departure from the Pentagon at 12 p.m. Speaker Program and Musical Tribute 1:30 p.m. at the Reflecting Pool across from The Lincoln Memorial. Thousands of motorcycles ride through Washington in an annual demonstration seeking to improve veteran benefits and resolve POW/MIA issues.

Arlington National Cemetery: Flags-In. Soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) will be joined by service members from the U.S. Marine Corps Ceremonial and Guard Company, U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard, U.S. Air Force Honor Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard Ceremonial Honor Guard in placing more than 250,000 grave decorating flags at Arlington National Cemetery. The flags will remain through Memorial Day.

Monday, May 25, 2015, 11 a.m. A wreath-laying ceremony and concert will be held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in honor of Memorial Day.

  • Monday, May 25, 2015, 4 p.m. The Women In Military Service For America Memorial, located at the gateway to Arlington National Cemetery, will hold a ceremony that includes formal military honors, a keynote address, wreath-layings and the Memorial’s signature event, the scattering of rose petals in tribute to departed comrades. Members of the public are invited to join in the personal tribute segment of the program.

Navy Memorial

  • Saturday, May 23, 2015, 11 a.m. Rolling Thunder visits the Navy Memorial and holds a wreath-laying ceremony featuring special guests and live performances.
     
  • Monday, May 25, 2015, 10 a.m. Fleet Reserve Association Wreath laying, 12 p.m. U.S. Navy Band Concert, 1 p.m. Naval District Washington Wreath laying.
     

World War II Memorial
Monday, May 25, 2015, 9 a.m. The National Park Service and the Friends of the National World War II Memorial will sponsor a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of our veterans. Guest speakers will give remarks. The theme for the commemoration is "Honoring our Fallen Warriors." Many surviving WWII veterans will be in attendance.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Monday, May 25, 2015, 1 p.m. Thousands of veterans and their families congregate at The Wall to remember and to honor the U.S. armed forces. The wreath-laying ceremony is open to the public.

Air Force Memorial
Monday, May 25, 2015, 9 a.m. wreath laying ceremony is open to the public. Activities include the national anthem, invocation, speeches, the laying of the wreath and the sounding of Taps.

President Lincoln's Cottage
Monday, May 25, 2015. Take a free guided tour of the USSAH National Cemetery (predecessor of Arlington National Cemetery) at 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. A wreath laying ceremony will also take place at the Soldiers' Home at 10 a.m. Tours of the Cottage will be available from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the regular price of $15 for adults and $5 for children. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch. Advanced reservations for Cottage Tours are strongly recommended.

NEW YORK CITY MEMORIAL WEEKEND EVENT

New York City Fleet Week: Annual New York City Fleet Week May 20-26, 2015.  This is a Free week long event which includes Parade of Ships (May 20th), Navy Band Concert, Larchmont Memorial Day Parade, Joint Aviation Event, Greenpoint Veterans Memorial Parade, College Point Memorial Day Parade, Maspeth Memorial Day Parade, Village of Hastings-on-Hudson Memorial Day Parade, Fleet Week New York Community Music Festival, several General Public Visitation (ship tours), 147th Kings County Memorial Day Parade, and several other parades which can be found here.
