dinopuppet1Imagine if the bones and fossils of ancient dinosaurs could come back to life, what stories they might tell!

No need to imagine any more, as Rainbow Puppet Productions presents “The Really BIG Dinosaur Show.” Through original songs and the use of more than 20 giant puppets, the time of the dinosaurs reappears on stage. There’s an 8-foot-tall Tyrannosaurus Rex, mamma and baby dinosaurs, and another dinosaur that’s over 16 feet long. This fun-packed stage show is packed with lots of audience participation.

Dinos Live!

May 24-September 1, 2014

Watch our DINOmite VIDEO NOW!

A new gang of dinosaurs is coming to town this summer at the Virginia Living Museum! Roaring, stomping robotic prehistoric creatures have been a popular attraction every time they’ve been featured at the museum. But this year, for the first time, the VLM will feature the lifelike creations of Billings Productions, North America’s leading producer of animatronic dinosaurs.

The summer exhibit, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, will take visitors back more than 65 million years to the Cretaceous period, the heyday of dinosaurs when Tyrannosaurus rex ruled North America. Tremble at a growling T rex. Then watch a Edmontosaurus mother tend her brood. There’s even a nest full of eggs ready to hatch. See Euoplocephalus, built like a military tank, and Styracosaurus, one of the most spectacular of the horned dinosaurs. Citipati, the dinosaur that highlights the link between non-avian dinosaurs and birds, has a spectacular head crest that is similar to that of a modern cassowary.

Each animatronic dinosaur is powered by a pneumatic system and fitted with its own electronic “brain” to activate and control fluid movements and prehistoric sounds. The robotic dinosaurs use air pistons and state-of-the art electronics under steel frames to fuel the creatures. The frames are covered with detailed foam rubber skin to simulate their lifelike appearance with bony horns, sharp claws and blade-like teeth.

New this summer will be a tented outdoor dinosaur excavation area. Amateur paleontologists can search through a mound of fossil-filled sediment and then take home real fossils. And they can help uncover real fossil bones of ancient whales. Four to five million years ago whales swam in an ocean that covered the Peninsula.

Time: 9am-5pm (daily). The exhibit will also be open three evenings 6-8pm, June 14, July 12 and Aug. 9.
Cost: Exhibit included in general museum daytime admission. VLM members free, non-members $17 adults, $13 children (ages 3-12).
Evening prices: DINOS LIVE! will be open during our monthly evening Star Parties (June 14, July 12 and August 9 only) VLM members  free, non-members $6
