Nauticus Launches Sea Creature Contest to Engage Families During School Closures
Deep sea creatures have been social distancing for thousands of years, and now regional students and families will have an opportunity to imagine, create, and design their own aquatic animals from home. Nauticus has launched its first annual DEEP SEA TRASH CREATURE CONTEST in answer to a need for home-based, educational content due to school closures associated with COVID-19. To enter the contest, families must research the unique adaptations animals utilize to survive in the deep ocean. Then, using recyclable materials and other items found around their house, entrants will create the most extraordinary creature they can imagine.
“With schools closed, our goal is to support families trying to provide that educational content at home,” said Stephen E. Kirkland, executive director of Nauticus. “This contest is not only incredibly fun, it also gives families a chance to learn about marine biology, design and engineering principles, and the importance of recycling.”
Entrants must include a video or photograph with a description explaining how their creature survives the deep ocean. Entries will be submitted via the Nauticus website or posted on the entrant’s public Instagram (tagging @nauticusnorfolk), on their public Facebook (tagging @nauticus), or on the Facebook event page (tagging@nauticus).
The contest is in connection with Nauticus’ upcoming summer exhibit, Voyage to the Deep, and ends on Thursday, April 30. Winners will be selected every two weeks: One for Best Looking Sea Creature and one for Most Unique Sea Creature. Each winner will receive a take-out dinner for four (4) from a local restaurant, a selection of board games (delivered via Amazon), and a Voyage to the Deep prize package consisting of a Nauticus Family Plus Membership, BB64 Restaurant Gift Certificate, and a Banana Pier Gift Shop Gift Certificate. Prize value is $400. Announcement of the winners will occur via social media.
