Our family stumbled upon Wintergreen Resort nearly 12 years ago. We had only been stationed in Hampton Roads, Virginia for a couple years and it was time to explore beyond our 30 mile bubble. A couple friends of ours had told us about a wonderful place in the mountains called Wintergreen Resort. An easy drive from Hampton Roads at only 3 hours from Newport News, it sounded like the perfect weekend getaway. We rented a home through the resort, packed our car up, daugher in tow and hit the road to explore the mountains of Virginia.
That began our exploration outside of Hampton Roads and years to follow of visiting Wintergreen Resort. It has become a special place in our hearts and here we are in 2017 still visiting several times a year. Through the years we have explored what the Shenandoah Mountains and surrounding area has to offer. If you are a military family looking to escape the bubble of your military base and find the perfect weekend getaway…..check out our TOP 10 things to do at Wintergreen Resort. It’s only a short 3 hour drive from Hampton Roads, Washington DC and North Carolina and the drive is beautiful!

2) Cideries
A must stop- BOLD ROCK CIDERY
Why you must stop here: It is absolutely beautiful inside. You can see them bottling the hard cider behind glass walls. The interior is rustic and the views are spectacular. The cider is wonderful as well. You can sample flights and buy a cider to enjoy outside on the patio. Bold Rock has amazing food! Highly recommend lunch, very fresh and locally sourced. They do not serve dinner or heavy food. Great place to sit outside on a beautiful day.
Wineries
There are so many wineries in the area I don’t quite know where to start. We have visited only a handful. I will suggest the ones we have been to because the wine was fantastic and the setting was amazing.
Veritos
On our bucket list: King Family Vineyards Polo Match- We invite guests who visit our Tasting Room on Sunday to join us fieldside to watch polo. Matches are held every Sunday, from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October, weather and field conditions permitting. Matches are free, open to the public, and begin at 1:00 pm. Please visit this page, or our Facebook Page on Sunday mornings after 9:00 am to confirm that we will be playing or call (434) 823-7800.
4) Hiking
The Blue Ridge Mountains are known for their hiking. There are endless amazing hikes in the area. Our must hike pics are below.
Crabtree Falls: the highest vertical-drop cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River, is a popular attraction located in Nelson County, just six miles off the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway near milepost 27. Crabtree Falls features a series of five major cascades and a number of smaller ones that fall a total distance of 1,200 feet. The first overlook is just a few hundred feet from the parking lot along a gentle, paved trail making it an excellent stopover for travelers of all ages and abilities. The more adventuresome hiker may continue along the 3-mile trail to four other overlooks offering spectacular views of the Crabtree Creek Falls and lovely vistas of the Tye River Valley. From the upper falls, the trail follows the creek another 1.2 miles to the Crabtree Meadows. Open dawn to dusk. Parking lot with daily parking fee per vehicle. Located on State Route 56. (via Virginia is for Lovers)
**This is a must do when you visit Wintergreen Resort. It’s maybe a 30 minute drive. The scenery is spectacular. It is a bit of a steep hike so may not be suitable for someone with knee problems. However, our young children have done the hike. The best part is you do get instant gratification by seeing the waterfall not far into the hike and it is not difficult to get to this portion of the hike. Therefore, if some want to stop there while others continue it is an option**
5) Virginia Animal Safari
6) Grand Caverns
7) Drive to Charlottesville for the afternoon. Michie Tavern, Lunch at Citizen Burger, check out the campus
8) Natural Bridge
9) Resort Fun: speaking as an avid golfer Devils Knob is my favorite golf course in Virginia. It offers challenging mountain golf, beautiful views, amazing temperatures and great food afterwards. Devils Knob is private but open to resort guests. Stoney Creek is just as beautiful and challenging offering 27 holes of golf. The kids love to hit Discovery Ridge, our favorite is the plunge both in summer and winter. All the restaurants are fantastic. The kids also LOVE to go down to Stoney Creek and spend a couple hours at Lake Monacan. They have a trampoline and ice wall in the lake which they can spend hours on. They also have kayak, bike, and other rentals for the lake. The pool is another great amenity. It does cost money but they do enjoy it.
10) The farmers market and restaurants are all fantastic in the area. It is a very organic farm to table kind of place. Here are our recommendations:
